Join us as we explore one of Wisconsin’s most beautiful and overlooked rivers, and learn about a unique agreement forged 11 years ago that governs the hydropower dams on this river system.
The 115-mile-long Menominee River forms the border between Wisconsin and Michigan’s Upper Peninsula and flows to Marinette and Lake Michigan. Our summer solstice paddle starts at the White Rapids dam, where you’ll learn about an experiment underway that will ultimately help the storied lake sturgeon migrate around the dam.
In addition to insights about hydro dam operation and lake sturgeon migration on the Menominee, you will learn about:
- how land use and development affect the river shoreline differently in Michigan and Wisconsin; and
- a proposed mine project a stone’s throw from the river in Michigan.
We’ll put in the river just east of Amberg and paddle about 11 miles. It is a technically easy paddle. After a few riffles in the “Sixty Islands” area, the river is flat but with a steady current. We’ll start at 10 a.m. and finish up no later than 3:30 p.m.<./p>
